Photo of the Day

Fried chicken in my grandmother's cast iron skillet. I have so few of her possessions and not nearly enough pictures. So while the memories I have are worth so much more it is nice to have something tangible to remember her buy. I can't use this pan without thinking about my Irma Louise. I like to think that will never go away, no matter how many years she's been gone.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Clockwise from top left: brussels sprout plant, buttercrunch lettuce, broccoli and romaine. I have a bunch of those lettuces and some iceberg as well. There is a row of cabbage growing too. So far the broccoli and brussels sprouts are really shooting up; I can't wait to see what they look like after all of this rain.

And a picture of Jack. Because seriously, how cute is he? I KNOW.

I'm going to go cry now.

The Garden Pond

My mom has had this garden pond liner and pump for a year now, just sitting in her garage collecting dust. Two weeks ago my 15 year old brother decided to do something about it. With a book from the library on installing lawn ponds, a shovel, a level, and his own two hands he finally finished it all last night. This weekend he's filling it with water, treating the water and purchasing carefully selected fish for it.

I'm so proud of this kid.

Oh Facebook

There are some disturbing fanpages on facebook, like this one. And I'll be completely honest, I will judge anyone who thinks this is okay or becomes a fan of it. I never liked George Bush's policies but I would have never wished for Laura to be without her husband or for Jenna and Barbara to lose their dad.

Grow up, people.

The Double Down

Double Down

Yesterday on my way in to classes I stopped by KFC. Now let me preface this by saying under normal circumstances I love Kentucky Fried Chicken. I mean, I am a proud Kentuckian who has eaten at both the Sanders Cafe and the Claudia Sanders Dinner House, for one. For two, this is the food that has shown up at almost every major family function and after funeral dinners since the beginning of my existence. Three, even Anthony Bourdain admits that their mac and cheese is pretty freakin’ delicious.

So you get it, I’m guilty of being a fan. Like on a very limited, once in a while treat sort of way…I swear. (Very early heart disease does run rampant in my family you know.)

So I caved into the pressure and the hype of the Double Down and ordered it. I believe my exact words were when I called my mother, “the internet made me do it.”

Oh. My. God. This was singlehandedly the grossest thing I’ve ever eaten. It was dripping in oil, as though they pulled it from the fryer and immediately stuck it in box without so much as a drain and gave it to me. After I sopped it up with a napkin I ate maybe 2 bites before deciding this was $7 of wasteful spending and I was still going to be hungry because in no way was I finishing it.

Maybe mine was just poorly prepared, maybe it’s because I really, really, really enjoy bread and couldn’t get over the idea of chicken filets acting like carb substitutes. I keep thinking KFC could have made a killing on them during the height of the Atkin’s Diet craze.

Bottom line, for me this was a serious no go. I’ll stick to my extra crispy or grilled pieces and a helping of that nuclear orange shit if I’m so inclined to indulge in the colonel’s secret recipe again.

The (hair) from the black lagoon

I told him the hair was giving me heart palpatations and that having so much of it was holding him back from looking like the 15 year old that he is. Mostly if he had enough gumption to style it daily I wouldn't have minded it. But guess what? Fifteen year olds are super lazy.

He either agreed with my assessment or the warm weather was making his head itchier than normal. Probably the latter.

(Pre-styling, I still don't have a decent after shot.) Either way it's gone and I'm a happy sister again.
